Providing cancer patient with the support they need begins once they receive their initial diagnosis and continues even after procedures like surgery conclude. The exact regimen they need will depend on whether that patient has a history of anxiety, depression, or other negative emotions. Regardless of the patient's condition, their support systems, whether from loved ones, fellow survivors, or healthcare personnel, will help them cope with the changes to their life’s trajectory caused by their diagnosis. They will learn how to process negative emotions properly and even when to stop seeking out information if doing so is negatively impacting their mental health.
The emotional needs of patients have been largely overlooked by oncologists, but Dr. Ernesto Contreras, Sr. started providing support for the whole person–body, mind, and spirit–back in 1963 at the Oasis of Hope Hospital. Today, Oasis of Hope patients receive group and individual counseling with a focus on forgiveness, stress management, and finding purpose.
